Carol Weld (named Florence Carol Greene), was born in 1904. During her childhood she was the stepdaughter of writer H.P. Lovecraft due to his marriage to her mother, Sonia Greene. As a journalist, she served as a foreign press correspondent in France during the 1930s and 1940s, and claimed to be the first American to report on the abdication of British King Edward VIII in 1936.
